Is Centre still a NRL Fantasy Wasteland?

The following statistical analysis looks at Fantasy scores of actual Centers, excluding Goal Kicking Points (NGK). In this analysis we looked at (NGK) scores and other Statistics from games where Centres played the normal 80 Minutes. Our Fantasy Scoring retroactively incorporates any Fantasy scoring changes such as changes to Tackle Break and Offload Scoring, so such changes do not become a factor in the analysis.

Centre has long been considered the greatest wasteland actual position for NRL Players with respect to Fantasy Points production. Prior to 2022, you could count on 1 hand the number of NRL Centres to play 10+ games in the season and finish with a 40+ Fantasy Average from them. That seems to have dramatically Changed in recent years. The lowest average fantasy score position has always been Wing with Centre historically only 3.5 Points or so better. If we go back to 2018 The Average of all Wing Fantasy Scores from games of 75-85 minutes came in at 27.5. In the same season Centres from 75-85 minute games averaged 30.7. Only 1 player averaged 40+ from 10+ Centre Starts - Kerrod Holland, 10 Games 44.3 Average. The shift started in 2022, with the 80 minute centre (NGK) Average hitting 34.8. From 2015-2020 this was in the range of 30.7-31.4. The season also produced 5 Centers with 10+ Centre games and an (NGK) over 40. The highest of these was Joey Many with 18 Centre games and an (NGK) of 46.0 just behind Dane Gagai`s 18 Game (NGK) of 46.2 in 2021.

2023 produced a mammoth 12 players with 10+ Centre Games for a 40+ (NGK). It also saw an actual centre break the 50 barrier for the first time with Dane Gagai averaging 54.4 from 20 Centre games, and remarkably a 2nd player within decimal places of it with Izack Tago playing 14 Centre Games for an average of 49.3. 2024 Produced 9 in the 40+ club and saw Herbie Farnworth beat Dane Gagai`s previous year mark with an average of 56.1 and Dane Gagai also breaking the 50 mark again with a 50.8 Centre Average. 2025 again produced 9 Centres averaging over 40 points a game, and yet again a new record average was set with Herbie Farnworth amassing a goliath 63.2 Points a game! An actual Centre had the 4th highest Fantasy average of all full season players.

We can also see the NRL Competition wide numbers increasing from 2022-2025. The numbers point to an uptick in receipts, meters and tackle breaks with an apparent slight uptick in Tackles and Try scoring. It definitely seems that one result of the new 6 again rules in the game is increased involvement of outside backs (we do actiually see very similar trends with Wing players as well).

Fantasy Implications

CTR is no longer the afterthought position that it used to be. In 2025 WFB produced 6 regular players with a 50-60.2 Average. Comparatively, CTR produced 5 with Jacob Kiraz being common to both and Herbie Farnworth beating all of the WFBs. Two of these were DPP Edge players in Dylan Lucas and Beau Fermor. At the same time, you only have 2 CTR spots to fill compared to WFBs 3. Jacob Kiraz`s 52.2 being the 2nd highest actual outside back CTR average, finished just 2.8 Points away from the 5th Highest HLF player and just 3.1 points shy of the 5th highest EDG player. Kiraz average was Higher than Harry Grant and only behind Blayke Brailey (barely) as far as actual Hookers go. Beau Fermor who finished with the 3rd highest CTR average of 52.8 Ranked 30th across all Fantasy Players, 9 of the players above him averaged between 52.8 and 55.
